One day I started to get pop-ups. I wasn't going to unknown web sites. I was going to my regular sites that I knew didn't give pop-ups so I couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I took a look at my task manager and found a program I had never seen before, EQAdvice. So I did some research and found out that EQAdvice is a Trojan and adware.
A Trojan horse, or Trojan, is a type of malware that will get onto your computer by posing as a desirable program. It could appear as a screen saver, a game, an antivirus program, etc. Once a Trojan is on your computer it will open up security holes in your computer or network so that the creator can get some kind of access or control of your computer or network. Once said access to your computer or network is achieved, it can be used in spam campaigns, denial of service attacks, or your private files can be accessed and possibly destroyed. That can be a big problem if your computer is used for business or you have information that you want to keep confidential.
Adware is basically software that floods you with advertisements. Usually these ads take the form of pop-ups, but can take other forms as well. Adware hogs your computer's processor and bandwidth leading to slow computer and Internet speeds. Adware can come with a program, be a program itself, or get installed if you just visit the wrong web page.
I did some digging and found out that in order to remove programs like EQAdvice you need an anti-spyware program. There is a problem with this though. Most anti-spyware programs only remove 80-90% of an infection. This can leave you still infected. I knew there had to be a program out there that did better than 80-90% so kept looking. No other software maker out there even tries to give you 100%!
